Lalitgiri is one of the earliest Buddhist settlements in Odisha. This incredible tourist destination is situated about 120 km north of Bhubaneswar. According to a series of tweets by the Archaeological Survey of India, The Lalitgiri museum has been organized into six galleries with a display of antiquities, at a cost of Rs.86 Lacs. There are huge sculptures of Lord Buddha and various Buddhist deities, architectural fragments of Viharas and Chaityas are arranged period-wise across six galleries.
The tweets also quote that the government has spent approximately Rs 10 crore in construction of Lalitgiri museum which is spread over an area of 4,750 sq.m. The Lalitgiri Museum houses 3 sacred Khondalite stone caskets which date back to the earliest phases of Buddhism.
Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Archaeological Museum. The museum was built by ASIGoI, the museum aims to protect & preserve retrieved antiquities. The museum is built in the larger public interest to boost tourism, as per policy of Site Museum.
